This is an incredible photo album featuring exactly 300 pictures of a young soldier’s time serving with the 78th Infantry Regiment in the years leading up to WWII and possibly into WWII. The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) or War of Resistance (Chinese term)[a] was a military conflict primarily between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan. The war made up the Chinese theater of the wider Pacific Theater of the Second World War. The beginning of the war is conventionally dated to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on 7 July 1937, when a dispute between Japanese and Chinese troops in Peking escalated into a full-scale invasion. Some Chinese historians consider the start of the war as the Japanese invasion of Manchuria on 18 September 1931. China was aided by the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and NSDAP Germany before its alliance with Japan. Around 20 million people, mostly civilians, were killed.

The 78th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Imperial Japanese Army. The regiment was attached to the 39th Infantry Brigade of the 20th Division. The regiment participated during the Second Sino-Japanese War and during the later stages of World War II, the regiment was in New Guinea, as part of the Japanese Eighteenth Army. The album consists mainly of individual portraits of Japanese soldiers wearing the “Showa Type 5” uniforms, also called the M90 or 1930 uniform all with the same regiment collar tabs. All photos are in wonderful condition and still very clear. They mainly consist of portraits but there are various group pictures, training photos and troop movement photos.
